From Rowhouses to Megastructures: the Saint-Viateur East Sector

Offered by The Friends of Saint-Laurent Boulevard and Mile End Memories as one of the Jane’s Walks**
Led by Justin Bur

Mile End’s Saint-Viateur East Sector (bordered by Saint-Laurent Boulevard, Laurier Avenue, Saint-Denis Street and the CP railway line) features three-storey rowhouses beside 12-storey megastructures and a wild meadow occupying a former rail yard beside the formal garden of a cloistered religious community. In addition to discovering the evolution, over the past 150 years, of the area’s unique urban landscape, participants on this walk honouring urban activist Jane Jacobs (1916-2006) will discuss ideas about its future, including results of several ongoing citizen initiatives.

Date and time: Sunday 8 May 2010, 2:00-3:30 p.m.

Departure and arrival point: Southeast corner of Saint-Laurent Boulevard and Saint-Viateur Street (55 bus)

Language: French and English (depending on participants)
